I’m James. Welcome to discover-ability.com Coaching. For many years now I’ve worked with parents of special needs children to help them understand and unlock what their child’s full potential, and set them on the path of a happy and fulfilling life.
Coaching has improved vastly over the last 25 years and it’s techniques can help parents create sensible and attainable goals and life plans for their children. Usually this is often around preparation for employment can also help with other areas if they are not ready for this.
I aim to give parents and carers a renewed confidence and sense of hope that a lot more is possible and attainable than they have previously thought. My aim is to provide the tools and support to bring these hopes one step closer to reality
You dont need me to tell you every child is unique, and sadly, and taht we don’t see enough examples of young people with disabilities and positive disabled role models participating in society. I want to change this.
I’ve been working in education section in special needs in young people for many years and have developed an understanding of what is possible with patience, hard work and preservice. It has given me great pride to watch these students achieve their goals in life. I’ve worked with parents of children with ASD, Asperger’s, EBD, ADHD, Downs Syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and many more conditions
At a relatively early age I was diagnosed with Dyslexia a specific learning difficulty that affects an individual’s abilities with short term memory, reading, spelling and perform other tasks, so I can both relate and empathise on a personal level with how disabilities can affect children. I also have siblings with learning difficulties and I can relate to the family dynamics of having special needs that that brings.
I’m a single parent I understand and empathise with the everyday struggles challenges and occasional joys that parenthood brings.
I’m a qualified a teacher. Originally I studied Computer Science, then went on to gain a PGCE certificate of education and qualified teacher status (QTS) More recently I completed a Masters degree in Education, Inclusion and Leadership.
It’s important to understand everyone has different levels of ability and disability. The more complex and serious the young person’s challenges careful consideration and planning goes into creating a realistic and sensible set of goals to help. Every plan will be unique for each child and I will work closely with the parents and children to ensure that every step they feel in complete control.
I passionately believe we all have much more potential in us than we often realise. Too often, those with disabilities are slowly pushed to the sides and fringes of society. We live in an increasing changing and dynamic world where disabilities are no longer seen as something to be hidden, but there is still a sadly lacking visability of disabled people living their lives to the full.
I want to be part of helping that to change.
My work in the last few years has been around offering support in the transition from education to employment, there are relatively few Supported Internships schemes running in country, I am fortunate to have experience in this vital area, that impacts lives in such a meaningful way.
The path to a meaningful carer and life is seldom simple for any of us, it’s difficult to predict where our careers will take us, however when considering the added complexities of a disability it might feel like a road map simply doesn’t exist. There are many agencies, charities and organisations who can offer wonderful support at various stages.
However, the fact remains employment and employability are difficult to plan whilst an individual remains in education, firstly careers education and guidance provision varies form one institution to another – secondly and most importantly other than limited work experience” these settings often have less experience working with individuals in a natural working environment.
When an young person has not worked before as is so often the case for those still in education it is a challenge for agencies to develop a picture of their capabilities, aspirations and disabilities and gauge the types of work they may progress into. Despite best efforts, all too often aspirations are still too low as when people cant see the way forward. I have facilitated many individuals through this process
I’ve seen this progress unfold many times and will coach you in developing a plan that works
