A few pointers / advice for improving your employment support
OK yes, we’re taking a Person Centred approach to our support and we understand considering the strengths of the individual is the starting point for securing a paid employment outcome for a person with a disability. We heroically aim to match the skills and aspirations to any available opportunities but ensure that the individual continues to have input during those key point throughout the process.
1) I am not a number
And that’s all fine and dandy but if we fail to really think about requirements for each person on an individual basis and then provide personalised assistance in the workplace, we are not off to a good start so a thorough profiling activity is essential.
Remember – Employers need to receive the appropriate amount of support to enable them to optimise their employees performance.
2) Beware shifting sands
Implement support requirements in a timely fashion ensuring a sparkling seemless continuation of productive work from the employee, often change precipitates problems.
3) Remember you are not an island
We do not work in isolation, and aim reach an understanding with all persons involved, it is especially important that the individual is supported in understanding any social aspects, developing the ‘soft skills’ that are essential in many of today’s working environments.
We should consider the amount of support that is required and always use ‘natural’ systems as a preference before intervention is considered
6)Lurking / Au naturel #2
Natural involvement of colleagues in the job matching cycle can help to ensure their contributions are included. This may help to foster a good working relationship with the Job Coach. We must make sure they are working on the ‘periphery’ and facilitate individuals who would normally complete training fulfil their job. The aim is to bridge gaps that exist between the natural processes, people and supports with appropriate job coaching.
