Coaching has been improved and developed over the past 25 years. It focuses on getting results for the client, it aims to make a difference to your life in the here and now.
The coach is a catalyst helping you understand your own internal motivation and insights that you may be failing to access.
During my time working within supported employment I’ve come to realise the differences between coaching someone (helping them to learn) and teaching. Teaching assumes that the teacher knows best and students follow the teachers lead. Where a coach understands that an individual has that potential inside, the good coach helps clients discover their own answers. The coaching experience is one where the client work on their own actions
How does a coach help?
A coach accomplishes this with the use of methods to help each client discover their own solutions, and go on to expand their awareness of what it is they wish to accomplish. Ultimately revealing why, they haven’t reached that point yet, what could be holding them back. This awareness and responsibility encourages clients to overcome obstacles and go on to succeed.
A is not a counsellor, a therapist. The main difference is a coach will focus on what is achievable in the present. Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to realise their goals, dreams and ambitions
Coaching in overcoming your internal critic
Tim Galloway spent many years perfecting his ideas and techniques relating to the concepting of inner game. He developed the ideas in the field of sports, but the concepts hold when developing skills and accomplishments in any domain.
He believes a good coach is able to silence that paralysing internal critic many of us suffer from when distracted from the neigh -saying force we are free, this internal conscious voice is just one part of our functioning mind when its doubting effect is removed real progress can be made. We all have the answer, distract the inner voice and quiet the fear.
The Conscious Competency models
Your coaching session will use the following model to facilitate your learning, it follows when learning anything new like driving a car.
We raise awareness of the things that we can’t do and then consciously set about trying to improve them.
So as a coach I’ll take the approach that you as an individual have the answers. During a coaching session, we will improve awareness of your goals and ambitions for yourself or those in your care, collaboratively uncovering answers of how to overcome obstacles and take responsibility for putting your plans into action
